ARTIST STATMENT
As an artist, I have painted people, places and objects which I find thought-provoking and somewhat mysterious.
Primarily working with oil paint on canvas, I choose a low-intensity palette and employ shadows, depth creation and linear structure to create a feeling of calm and serenity, mixed with a sense of the surreal and wonder. There appears to be more going on behind the scenes than what actually appears on the canvas.
I am fascinated with architecture, attracted to its straight lines, detail, texture and depth. In many of my works, perspective and texture are the primary focus.
I strive for great depth of perception to allow the viewer to be pulled into the painting, just as I was pulled into the actual surroundings. There are certain objects and scenes that evoke such an emotional response in me that I feel compelled to interpret them on canvas.
I intentionally paint my subject matter only partially on the canvas to extend the eye and the mind beyond the painting.
Avoiding too much detail, which can be overpowering and distracting, I focus in on a small part of the whole scene, one which I find the most interesting and often the most provocative.
